HAVANA: “I am in control.” Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi asserted his authority when he told his critics that he has not lost control of his administration.
The Prime Minister said he was committed to making reforms in the country but would do things “my way.”
However, he added that he would not resort to making arbitrary changes or without consulting his Cabinet colleagues.
Abdullah said it was wrong of people to assume that he had lost control just because ministers had differing opinions on certain matters.
“This does not happen every day,” he added, saying that in such cases he would refer to the Cabinet to correct things.
The different views were normally due to some “grey areas” in the role of the ministries, he told Malaysian journalists at the end of the NAM Summit here yesterday.
“People who don’t understand say Pak Lah has lost control.
“But it is their view. What can I do?
“From the political perspective, I do not have any problem in the Barisan Nasional or Umno,” he said when asked to comment on remarks in Parliament by Kota Baru MP Datuk Zaid Ibrahim that the Prime Minister had not made reforms that had been promised after he took over the position three years
ago.
Abdullah said reforms could not be made overnight, adding that everyone had his way of doing things but should not lose sight of the objectives.
“I consult the Cabinet on all matters. That’s my way of doing things.”
Abdullah said several Cabinet committees and parliamentary select committees had been set upfor specific issues to ensure decisions made would not result in problems for the people.
“In some cases, it could take long periods to decide, as much deliberation is needed.
“After the committee makes a decision, the Cabinet will discuss and make adjustments before implementing them.
“It’s okay if it takes a longer time but, at least, we will know that the decisions are good and the problems resolved. The bottom line is that our objectives are met.”
Abdullah added that he constantly asked his officers for information and they kept him updated. “It is not that we forget problems or ignore them,” he said.
Citing examples of reforms already in place, the Prime Minister said he had allowed the setting up of select committees to give the opportunity to MPs to give their views on important matters affecting the people.
“We even include Opposition members in the committees. This is how Parliament should operate and this is one example of the reforms we initiated,” he said.
Honestly, I don't believe a thing.
1) During the Mahathir's regime, no one dares to blind-shoot any department in the Ministry. Yet, in the era of Pak Lah, we are all suprised when Ong Tee Keat suddenly bashes the Education Ministry officers. Due to that, Datuk Ong was counter-attacked by Dato' Seri Hishamuddin who urged Datuk Ong to apologise to him. Yet, he DID NOT.
CYBERJAYA 17 Sept.
2) He surely lost control of Dato' Seri Nazri Aziz when his cabinet was critised by Tun Dr. Mahathir. Unlike any other cabinet members, Dato' Seri Nazri Aziz was the 'big-guy' in defending all the attacks by Tun Dr. Mahathir. Not just that, he even cursed back Tun Dr. Che' Det. When Pak Lah asked him to keep his mouth shut, what did he do? Nothing
3) During the Mahathir regime, no one DARES to SHOOT HIM. Even when Anwar was falsely accused and humiliated in public, the cabinet still gave a green light to Dr. Mahathir, because people are afraid of him and his four horsemen (Police, SB, Military, Power as a Prime Minister). Yet, in the Pak Lah era, his own kids critise him. He can't even get a grip on his own kids.
Umno MPs startle party by criticising Abdullah
Comments by two lawmakers suggest PM should beware of perceptions of his inaction

TWO Umno MPs went against the grain this week by openly criticising the Prime Minister for his lacklustre reform initiatives.Speaking in Parliament earlier this week, the two MPs - one a respected veteran and the other somewhat of a maverick - said Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi's pledges have not been met with real action. 4) When he said that Scomi didn't received any government tender, as Scomi received tenders from Shell and Esso, and so on, he didn't know that he was lying. Actually, he didn't know of his workers' actions. That's the main problem. Surely he does not want Kamaluddin to be linked, in any form at all, with the government project. If his son does, surely that will tarnish his 'Mr Nice Guy' image. Yet, above all that, Scomi did received government tenders, not just a bit, but a lot.
In March, The Malay Mail reported that KTM had in 2005 awarded a five-year RM50 million contract to Scomi Group ‘to overhaul and maintain’ as many as 1,000 wagons. Also in March, Business Times reported that Scomi Group was going to submit a bid for a RM120 million contract ‘to make body parts for about 400 buses for state-owned Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd’.
Then in April, The Edge reported that Scomi Engineering Bhd is acquiring a 51% stake in MTrans Transportation Systems Sdn Bhd for RM30 million to provide it a platform to be a key player in urban transportation.Scomi Engineering had on April 28 signed an agreement with Kiara Kilau Sdn Bhd, which owns 100% stake in MTrans, to acquire the 51% stake. MTrans owns bus manufacturer MTRans Bus Sdn Bhd and MTRans Technology Bhd, which specialises in monorail systems and technology. This is, of course, for the Penang monorail project.
And I thought he said that Penang monorail project is not reserved for Scomi.
Recently, Scomi Marine Bhd received a letter of intent from TNB Fuel Services Sdn Bhd for a coal shipment contract for three years from Oct 1, with an option to extend for another two years, the company said. Scomi Marine announced to Bursa Malaysia on April 14 that under the contract, it would be required to transport 500,000 tonnes (with 20% variation) of coal from Australia, Indonesia and South Africa yearly.
Also recently, Scomi Group Bhd, an oil services company, won a contract from Petronas Carigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn Bhd to provide drilling fluids and other services for exploration works in Block 1, offshore Turkmenistan. In a statement issued by Scomi which was published by Business Times, Scomi said the contract would contribute about RM57 million a year to its coffers. Well, if any of you still believe in his words, I do not know what else to say.
